Prayer of the Woods
I am the heat of the hearth on the cold winter nights, the friendly shade screening you from the summer sun, and my fruits are refreshing droughts quenching your thirst as you journey on.
I am the beam that holds your house, the board of the table, the bed on which you lie, and the timber that builds your boat.
I am the handle of your hoe, the door of your homestead, the wood of your cradle, and the shell of your coffin,
I am the bread of kindness and the door of beauty.  Ye who pass by, listen to my prayer; harm me not.

From the Portuguese

There you are again, Squirrel.

You live under our deck and you show up daily to eat fallen
Sunflower seeds from the bird feeders.
I don't know if you are a boy or a girl Squirrel
The book says you are a Red Squirrel.
People call you a Mean Dude Squirrel because you chew on
everything if you happen to get into a garage.
I think you are a Cute Squirrel
As long as I stay behind the window, you let me watch you and
you dare come very close, even touching the window pane.
But when I open the door, you scoot away like a lightning flash.
I want you to be my friend, don't run away...
It is winter now and a lot of snow covers the deck and the ground.
You had to make tunnels to find a way out of your "home".
I see many holes in the snow which are entrances to your "quarters".
Is it warm under the snow covered deck?
When another Squirrel comes to eat you chase it away.
Can't you share? The birds do not seem to mind that you eat their fallen seeds.
Last week I put an apple slice close to the tunnel opening and you took it.
I saw you eat the piece with gusto.
Next time I eat an apple, I'll share it with you but you must come closer to me then.
One day you might eat out of my hand.
Don't be amazed.

A few summers ago I had a Thirteen Lined Ground Squirrel sitting on my shoe.
It was waiting for me to feed it.
So, you see, if you trust me we can become good friends and you will never be hungry again.
Of course, it is not safe to let a wild animal eat out of your hand.
It could bite you. So I will never do that unless I feed you a long piece and you stay on one end and I on the other.

This morning I woke up and the deck, your roof, had a new coat of snow.
I needed to brush the snow off the deck otherwise the door of my studio would be blocked shut.
Sorry, Squirrel, I closed your tunnel holes but I know that you will find a way out of your house very fast especially if you are hungry.

It is still snowing and the seed are covered once more.
You are putting your nose in the snow and come up with a seed.
Can you smell the sunflower seeds through the one inch layer of snow?

Oh, you are dashing off. Is there an intruder maybe trying to enter one of your escape holes?
Go get him Squirrel. Chase him away. Tell him to bother the tree cats of my neighbor instead of you.

Here you are again!
How often do you eat in a day?
No wonder you are looking so well fed.
And I bet that you do not exercise under that deck nor in the snow above. Storing up for Spring right!? For your busy season raising a family.

It is afternoon and I have not seen you in a while.
Are you already going to bed? It is still light outside.
If that is the case, then I wish you a good night
Red Squirrel,
Mean Dude Squirrel
but my
Very Cute Squirrel.
