Dead Tree Mystery Solved

Dead Tree Mystery Solved

There are several dead evergreens near the bridge on the west side of Shivering Sands Creek. These are jack pines, a Wisconsin native, but not native to Door County. They were planted many years ago and have not done well. Evergreens are frequently affected by road salt mist. This might have been their demise or was the end of their life span.

White pines are particularly susceptible to road salt drift along major highways and frequently are damaged or killed. Broad-leaved trees are not affected because the leaves are not exposed during “salting times”.A very interesting fact in regard to jack pines: The endangered species, Kirtland’s Warbler, will only nest in stands of jack pines that are at least 80 acres in size; Door
County is not habitat for jack pines.
