DNR Response to Gunfire near SNA

Response by Joe Henry of the DNR to the Recent Rapid-fire Gun Shots Heard in Shivering Sands State Natural Area (SNA)

March 24, 2016

A message from Joe Henry, DNR Upper Lake Michigan Ecologist regarding the recent rapid-fire shots heard by many folks in the Shivering Sands preserved land adjacent to Glidden Drive:

“I’ve talked with our State Natural Area (SNA) administration staff in addition to several conservation wardens about this issue to ensure my answer to you is accurate. Here is what I’ve found.

1. Target shooting is not allowed on SNAs
2. Discharging a firearm within 100 yards of an occupied structure is prohibited
3. According to Administrative Rule (NR 45.09) the only time shooting is permitted on SNAs is while hunting during authorized hunting seasons

In the future should anyone hear shooting outside of authorized hunting seasons I encourage them to try and get a photo of the vehicle, the license plate #, and the make and model and then call the Wisconsin DNR hotline at 1-800-TIP-WDNR or

In addition, the Door County Land Trust has also agreed that the DNR will take full management responsibility of the property. I would be grateful if you would share this information with folks as well. If you have any additional questions or concerns feel free to contact me.”
